Torres claims that prior to Real’s match with Barcelona at the Nou Camp in April 2011, the Madrid-based newspaper Marca – which has always had close ties with the Bernabeu – published in its on-line edition that Pepe would play in midfield. The information was correct.
After the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Mourinho was incandescent with rage.
“You’re traitors,” he screamed at the players, tears rolling down his cheeks.
“I asked you not to speak with anyone about the team selection but you’ve betrayed me. It shows that you’re not on my side. You’re sons of bitches.
“The only friend I have in this dressing room is [Esteban] Granero . . . and I’m not even sure that I can trust him any more. You’ve left me all on my own. You’re the most treacherous squad I’ve had in my life. Nothing more than sons of bitches.”
Keeper Iker Casillas pretended nothing was happening and walked off to the showers. However, Mourinho wasn’t done. He wiped away the tears, picked up a can of Red Bull and threw it against the dressing room wall. The can exploded and the contents dripped down the wall before Mourinho stormed out of the dressing room and told the players he was going to see club president Florentino Perez.
“If I’m in Vietnam and I see you laugh at a mate, I’d grab a gun with my own hands and kill you,” Mourinho said in his parting shot.
“Now it’s you yourselves who have to look for the one that leaked the line-up.”
In the end, the situation between Mourinho and a number of his senior players worsened, in particular with Casillas and vice-captain Sergio Ramos. The 2012-13 season was characterised by a rift between Mourinho and his players, especially the Spanish speakers, and he left the Bernabeu when the season ended at the beginning of June 2013.

주제 무리뉴 현 첼시 감독이 레알 마드리드 시절 스타 선수들과 대립했던 상황의 일단이 알려졌다. 디에고 토레스가 저술한 '더 스페셜 원; 주제 무리뉴의 어두운 단면'이라는 책이 영국에 번역 출간되었기 때문이다.
무리뉴의 독설은 잉글리시 프리미어리그에서나 스페인 프리메라리가에서나 유명했지만 연봉만 몇 백억원을 받는 선수들에게 '막말 욕설'까지 퍼부었다는 사실은 그 동안 알려지지 않았다. 스타급 선수들을 향한 '헤어 드라이'와 '축구화 내던지기' 신공의 알렉스 퍼거슨을 제외하면 감히 선수들을 이렇게 험하게 다룰 수 있는 감독은 무리뉴가 거의 유일한 존재일 듯하다.
"너희들은 배신자다. 내가 팀 선발에 대해서는 누구에게도 말을 하지 말라고 요청했는데 너희들은 나를 배신했다. 이는 너희들이 내 편이 아니라는 사실을 보여준다. 너희들은 'sons of bitches'다. 너희들은 내가 경험한 선수들 중에서 가장 믿을 수 없는 선수들이다. 그저 'sons of bitches'일 뿐이다." 이 책에 따르면 무리뉴가 라커룸에서 선수들에게 이런 말을 쏟아부었다는 것이다.
지난 2007년 첼시를 떠난 무리뉴 감독은 인터밀란을 거쳐 2010년 5월 레알 마드리드의 사령탑에 올랐다. 하지만 레알의 숙원이던 UEFA챔피언스리그 우승을 거두지 못하고 계속 4강 진출에 머무르자 클럽과의 협의 끝에 지난 2013년 6월 레알을 떠났다.
무리뉴는 레알 마드리드를 떠나기 전 크리스티아누 호날두, 이케르 카시야스, 세르히오 라모스 등의 스타 플레이어들과의 관계가 거의 회복하지 못할 지경까지 악화되었다. 레알의 홈인 베르나베우의 관중들도 무리뉴편과 반대편으로 나뉘어 반목하기도 했다.
